Japanese Style Valentine’s Day💗

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s day is called バレンタインデー(ばれんたいんでー/barentainde-) in japanese.

Valentine’s day is one of the biggest events for the people who have lovers all over the world.

What do you do on Valentine’s Day in your country?

We will learn Japanese Style Valentine’s day here!

Japanese Culture

Japanese culture is that girls give chocolates to their lovers, colleagues or families.

Recently, Valentine’s cultures are gradually changing.

Let’s see the kinds of japanese Valentine’s Day.

Chocolate types

本命チョコ(ほんめいちょこ/honmei choco)

First of all, I need to shere this kind of chocolate.

本命チョコ(ほんめいちょこ/honmei choco) is the gift for the favorite boy.

This is only one you can give someone who you love.

This should be the best and special, means “I love you”.

Girls want to present to their each favorite partner on Valentine’s Day with confession to him.

義理チョコ(ぎりちょこ/Giri choco)

This is for the people who are working together, are in the same community and are taking care of you.

The meaning is just “Thank you”. This doesn’t have big meanings.

友チョコ(ともちょこ/Tomo choco)

友チョコ(ともちょこ/Tomo choco) is for friends. There are no rules.

You can give presents anybody.

Japanese high school girls students make so many chocolates every year to their class mates.

That’s very big event:)

逆チョコ(ぎゃくちょこ/Gyaku choco)

If boys want to give a present to their partners on Valentine’s Day, that is 逆ちょこ(ぎゃくちょこ/Gyaku choco).

逆(ぎゃく/gyaku) means “opposite way” which is boys to girls.

But nomally, boys wait to get chocolates from girls on Valentine’s Day.

Other Kinds of gifts

Chocolate

This is the most common present on Valentine’s Day in Japan.

Chocolate has the meaning such as “I have the same feeling as you.”and “I want to keep this relationship.”

It can be for 本命チョコ(ほんめいちょこ/honmeichoco). and 義理チョコ(ぎりちょこ/girichoco) as well.

Macaron

Macaron has a luxurious feel, because it needs a long time to make.

So, the meaning is “You are my special”.

Candy

Candy needs a long time to be eaten.

The meaning is “keeping in touch for long time”

This is for the people who you want to keep this relationship in the future.

Tiramisu

Tiramisu means “Please cheer me up” from Italian language, Tira is “pull”, mi is “me” and su is “up”.

This is good for the people who you do something with.

Baumkuchen

Baumkuchen has many layers inside, so it means “hope many happinesses”.

It is good to family, I think.

Dounuts

Dounuts have holes in the middle which is similar sound as “whole”.

It has the meaning, “I like you a whole bunch”.

Madeleine

The meaning is “I want to be good relationship more”.

Because madeleine is the shell shape. And shellfishes have two shells.

This is good to co-workers.

Cookie

It’s easy to make a lot, so It means “keep to be this friendship”.

There is not special.

You should make exept cookies to your lover.

Marshmallow

Marshmallow is the worst gift in this list, because it is gone quickly, when we put it in our mouths, so this means “I want to escape”.

Don’t choose marshmallow for the valentine’s gift!

White Day

White Day is for boys. Boys give the gifts to girls.

This is on 14th March.

If a girl confess “love you” to you , you should answer on this day.

This is japanese culture too!

Have a good Valentine’s Day:)

My favorite and recommend chocolate↓
